Theatre at Kohlen Markt
Because of the shape, building of theatre in Danzig was often called caffee mill - Kaffe Mühle.
The initiator of new theatre idea was Jakub Kabrun, who at the end of 18th century together with some famous citizens started stock society, for which the main aim was the new theatre. On 3 January 1798 "Danziger Zeitung" published information about the contest for theatre\s project. At the end. city theatre at Targ Weglowy (Kohlen Markt) was built by C. S. Held in 1798 - 1801. The opening had place on 3 August 1801. Facade of the first theatre was 26 m width. There were 1600 seats in the house, scene was relatively small.

At the second half of 19th century the theatre needed general reparations or even re-building. Mainly because of lack of funds only the small reparations were made. In 1933 theatre got new owner - Senat of Freie Stadt Danzig. Then the name was changed to national theatre - Staatstheater and was between 1933 and 1935 rebuilt, the old building was demolished and new building was built on the same place. Foyer, scene and ticket-hall was enlarged, new house had 942 seats. The last show had place on 16th July 1944.

In 1945 building was serious destroyed and totally burned inside, the ruins stayed until the mid of 60s. In 1966 new theatre was build on the same place, the opening had place on 7 January 1967.
