Development and growth of the city were reasons that made port on Motllau river too small for citie's needs. New port was built along Vistula river to its mouth. The last part of Vistula river at the beginning called Neufahrwasser (New Stream) got the name Hafen Kanal (Port Channel), this name exactly described funktions of this part of river. The new canal was built to make shorter and easier access to harbour in the city, it was called Kaiser Hafen (Emperors Port and now it has a name Kaszubski Channel).

Plans of enlarging the port in danzig appeared in 1914 but the 1st world war stopped it. During Free City period port's infrastructure was renewed and enlarged. Danzig was the biggest port in Europe for timber export. This development was stopped by 2nd world war and at least in the 1970s new port was built near Wisloujscie (Weichselmünde).
