Police of Freie Stadt Danzig

To protect citizens and keep order in the city after the end of 1st World War police formation called Siecherheitspolizei (security police, short: Sipo) was created on 19th August 1919. In 1921 the government of Freie Stadt Danzig reformed the police and established Schutzpolizei (protection police, short: Schupo).

Police revirs played the most important role in police organisation in Free City. There were 12 revirs before 1926 and after the reforms their number decreased to 7.

Uniforms
At the beginning, police in Danzig had traditional dark blue uniforms, which were used to 1st December 1924. In 1922 the new uniforms in gray-green colour began to be introduced. The summer uniforms had lighter colour of washed linen. The red circle with the number on the left arm informed about the police revir. Policemen wear traditional cap called "tschako", at the beginning in black colour, later gray-green colour. There was a big coat of arms on the tschako with sentence "Nec Temere, Nec Timide". In 1935, as continuation of Leibhusaren tradition, policemen wear dead skulls (Totenkopf) on caps.

The police orchestra (Musikkorps) was well known in Danzig and abroad. It was commanded by famous composer Obermusikmeister, major Ernst Stieberitz. The orchestra was created 9th April 1920 and existed to the end of Freie Stadt Danzig.
